Apac District Hands Over Site for a Multi-Billion Staff Housing Project at General Hospital
Apac District Local Government leaders have officially handed over the construction site for a 1.78 billion shilling staff housing project at Apac General Hospital to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineering Brigade, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare service in the District.
The site handover ceremony, held at the hospital grounds, was officiated over by Andrew Onyuk, Apac Resident District Commissioner, and attended by district political leaders, technical officers, health administrators, representatives of the UPDF Engineering Brigade, representatives from the Hospital Board, and representatives of the community. The project is scheduled to run for 10 months from the date of handover.
District authorities described the development as a timely intervention to address the long-standing accommodation challenges facing health workers at Apac General Hospital. The hospital, which serves thousands of residents across Apac District and neighboring areas, has struggled with inadequate staff housing, affecting staff welfare and efficiency.
Speaking during the ceremony, Hon. Ikomba Asanti Odongo, the District Chairperson, emphasized that the project reflects the Apac District Local Government’s commitment to improving working conditions for frontline health workers. He noted that inadequate staff accommodation has long affected staff retention, response time to emergencies, and overall service delivery, but the decent and accessible accommodations will enhance staff retention, reduce delays in emergency response, and improve overall patient care.
“The project is not just buildings; it is about improving the welfare of our health workers, and this is a critical investment in our health sector. By providing proper housing for our medical personnel, we are directly improving the quality of services delivered to our people,” Asanti remarked.
The hospital staff housing project will involve the construction of two modern staff houses with 16 self-contained units within the hospital premises designed to provide decent and secure accommodation for medical personnel, including doctors, nurses, and other essential health workers. Leaders expressed optimism that upon completion, the initiative will significantly boost staff morale and create a more stable and responsive healthcare environment and reduce absenteeism linked to housing challenges.
The UPDF Engineering Brigade, renowned for implementing major government infrastructure projects across the country, assured stakeholders of quality workmanship and timely completion within the agreed 10-month period. Representatives of the brigade pledged to work closely with district authorities and management to ensure the project meets required standards.
“We are committed to completing this project on schedule and to the highest standards,” Lieutenant Engineer Stephen Omoding, site engineer, stated. “Our mandate is to support national development through timely and cost-effective infrastructure delivery.”
Health officials at Apac General Hospital welcomed the handover, noting that many staff members currently commute long distances due to lack of housing near the facility. They expressed hope that the new staff houses will greatly improve efficiency and service delivery, particularly during emergencies.
Community members present at the event applauded the district leadership and central government for prioritizing healthcare infrastructure, saying the project will have lasting benefits for the population.
The project aligns with the government’s broader agenda of improving health infrastructure and strengthening public service delivery across the country. Once completed, the staff housing units are expected to create a more conducive working environment for health workers and position Apac General Hospital as a more efficient and reliable referral facility in the region.
As construction begins, leaders have called upon all stakeholders to support the project and ensure its smooth implementation. With the site now officially handed over, construction is set to commence immediately, marking the beginning of what leaders described as a transformative chapter for Apac General Hospital and the broader health sector in the district.
